Business Tour of Transport Engineering 2014

Welcome to the Business Tour 2014 blog, a blog about the study tour of Dispuut Transportkunde Pandora of the master Transport Engineering and Logistics to the South-east of Asia. In this year’s tour, we will be visiting the countries Vietnam and South Korea. During the trip, the delegation will visit Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul and Busan. During this tour, companies will be visited and culture will be experienced. A mix of different activities will provide us with necessary views on Transport and Production Engineering, which cannot be obtained from course material. In order to share this experience with the home front, the Delft University of Technology, the Transport Institute of the university gave us the space to present our blog on their website and asked us to research how the coordination between internal and external transport in Vietnam and South Korea is, in comparison to the Netherlands. The research will be supported with several sub-questions, which are answered by teams formed among the participants of the study tour. Because internal and external transport can be compared on many different aspect, a few have been selected and each group has been assigned one aspect. 1. Lean is the first aspect in the role of suppliers on which the first company cluster from the study tour will be evaluated. Companies that are included in this cluster are PetroVietnam, FrieslandCampina (also known as Dutch Lady in Vietnam) and Vietnam Brewery Ltd. 2. The second company cluster will be evaluated on the automation aspect of internal and external transport. Here, the Busan Port Authory and Busan New Container Terminal will be reviewed. 3. In the third cluster, the companies Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering and Mercedes will be investigated on the topic of assembly processes. 4. Finally, the fourth cluster will contain the companies DB Schenker and Boskalis, and will be researched on the aspect project management in the role of transport and planning. Each company cluster will be reviewed on the difference and similarities concerning the aspect of the cluster. Also, the cultural differences between the companies will be investigated and in which way it affects the company in comparison with the Dutch culture. Every few days, an update to this blog will be provided to you and we hope that you will enjoy reading it.
